Medical research and information

Journal “Communications Biology” (Nature), Jan.,2021
Institute for Molecular Bioscience, The University of Queensland, Australia
Division of Biological Sciences, University of California, San Diego, USA
Antimicrobial resistance threatens the effectiveness of modern medicine, which depends largely on the successful prevention and treatment of bacterial infections. Unfortunately, there are practically no new therapeutic agents at the development stage, especially for gram-negative bacteria.
The Institute of Molecular Biology at the University of Queensland (Australia) and the Biology Department of the University of California San Diego (USA) have provided detailed assessments of the antimicrobial activity of cannabidiol (CBD), the main non-psychoactive component of cannabis, confirming previous reports of gram-positive activity and expanding the spectrum of pathogens tested, including the highly resistant Staphylococcus aureus , Streptococcus pneumoniae and Clostridioides difficile.
The results demonstrate that cannabidiol has excellent anti-biofilm activity, low tendency to induce resistance and local action in vivo. Multiple studies on the mechanism of action point to membrane disruption as the main mechanism of action of cannabidiol (CBD).
More importantly, for the first time, it is reported that cannabidiol can selectively kill a subset of Gram-negative bacteria, including the "urgent threat" pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcus)
Research demonstrates the potential to promote cannabidiol analogs as a much needed new class of antibiotics.
