In studies, CBD has shown a positive effect on the symptoms and pathology of IBD by reducing tissue damage, reproduction of reactive oxygen species in the colon. CBD also maintains the intestinal barrier, which is often disrupted in IBD. Compared to preclinical studies, there are few clinical trials of CBD in IBD. A recent study found that low doses of CBD (10 mg per day) were safe but not effective for Crohn's disease; however, the dose used in the study was extremely low and higher doses may be required to achieve therapeutic effect. Additional clinical trials are planned in the near future that will investigate the effects of CBD on IBD.
